Within Reach

Year: 2025

Location: Beijing, China

Area: 30,000 SF

Phase: Competition (Hospice - Home for the Terminally Ill)

Within Reach challenges the historical exile of death by embedding a scalable hospice prototype directly into the urban fabric. Inspired by the concept of the “nearby” and the “five-minute city,” the project situates end-of-life care within a dense Beijing neighborhood, weaving patients back into their community.

The design features three concentric rings: a core of nature-integrated private units under a translucent roof, a circulation ring for families, and an outer public layer housing a kindergarten and library to bridge generations. Constructed with "bone bricks" from local waste, the project proposes a dignified, intergenerational model that reintegrates life’s final chapter with the everyday.
